Medical Marijuana/Low THC Qualification Process

The Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act of 2014 allows doctors to order low-THC cannabis for patients seeking symptom relief for certain medical conditions. Prime Aesthetica is not a medical marijuana dispensary, but our health care providers can evaluate patients and send their medical marijuana card application to the Florida Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) Registry. Your marijuana ID card will be issued under the Florida Office of Compassionate Use provisions and can be used at a dispensary operated by one of the five Dispensing Organizations in Florida.

What is medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana or medical cannabis refers to derivatives of the Cannabis sativa plant. It is the same thing as recreational marijuana but grown in a medically optimized environment and used to treat medical conditions. The marijuana plant contains numerous compounds named cannabinoids, but when used to alleviate pain and various disease symptoms, only two chemicals are of interest to the medical community: THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol.).

While THC is responsible for the psychoactive effects and the euphoric feeling associated with the use of cannabis, CBD has therapeutic properties. CBD contributes to the improvement of the body's natural chemicals released when the organism has to combat inflammation and pain. Furthermore, the medical flavonoids and terpene found in cannabis act as a powerhouse against pain and help manage chronic illnesses. There is evidence that cannabinoids may:

  • reduce inflammation
  • reduce chronic pain
  • reduce anxiety
  • relax tight or stiff muscles in people with MS
  • stimulate appetite in people with cancer and AIDS
  • reduce nausea and vomiting due to cancer chemotherapy

What conditions qualify for medical marijuana use?

Limited research has shown that low-THC cannabis can be recommended for pain relief for several medical conditions. While definitive studies related to the ailments cannabis treats are yet to be published, early studies show that marijuana can be used to manage and treat:

  • muscle spasms
  • appetite loss
  • chronic pain
  • nausea
  • epilepsy
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Crohn's disease
  • glaucoma
  • seizure disorders
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • cancer
  • Parkinson's disease
  • HIV/AIDS
  • mental health conditions like PTSD and social anxiety
  • terminal conditions

Currently, 37 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana and allow doctors to recommend it to treat conditions that qualify for medical marijuana use. Remember that the list with the conditions that can be treated with medical marijuana varies from state to state and access to the medical cannabis program can be received only based on a marijuana ID card.

How to get your medical marijuana ID card

Not all doctors can recommend medical marijuana for patients. They need to be registered with the state's cannabis program. We collaborate with physicians authorized to register patients in the medical marijuana program. You would initially need to prove you are a Florida resident using a Florida driver's license or Florida state ID.

Secondly, you need to display symptoms of a qualifying medical condition that justifies the need to register in the medical marijuana registry. If you don't recognize your condition in the list, you may still qualify for a medical marijuana certificate if your affliction is of the "same kind or class” as one listed. Discuss your condition with our physician and see if you are eligible to receive a marijuana ID card.

If following the doctor's assessment, your condition falls under the medical marijuana laws and you are eligible to apply for a marijuana ID card, your contact information will be sent to the registry and you will receive an ID number. You can use the ID number to fill in your online application on the state's website. Our doctors will add new recommendations to your profile in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry.

All you have to do now is wait for the state to authorize and activate your application and you will become one of Florida's medical cannabis users. Florida residents with a valid FL driver's license usually receive their approval immediately and have the option to go to one of Florida's medical cannabis dispensaries the same day they've got their medical marijuana ID card.
