Botox and Dysport

Life is a string of emotions that make us smile, laugh, cry, or frown. We cherish our experiences and memories, but we are not so keen on the expression lines they leave behind. Facial movements create a map of our life on our faces that many of us would want erased and replaced with a youthful appearance. And for this, we have Botox and Dysport. Both are FDA-approved botulinum toxin products designed to minimize fine lines and facial wrinkles for you to enjoy a smoother and younger appearance.

What is Botox?

Botox is a popular neurotoxin created from a purified protein used to block muscle contractions. Designed to treat various medical conditions, including, neurologic conditions and nerve conditions, neurotoxin has found more popular use in the cosmetic industry. When used as a cosmetic treatment, the effects of botulinum toxin target the facial muscles to smooth lines and the appearance of facial wrinkles and glabellar lines. The cosmetic procedures that use injections of botulinum toxin are non-surgical and do not dramatically change the way you look nor “freeze” your face.

When performed by a trained and certified medical provider, the treatment guarantees natural results and will not impact the way you smile, frown, or manifest your facial expressions in any other way. This effective treatment is one of the most popular non-invasive procedures in the United States designed to combat the signs of aging and restore a youthful look.

Are Botox and Dysport the same thing?

Botox and Dysport may be considered similar products but there are several botulinum toxin types that are colloquially referred to as botox treatment. Both are botulinum toxin injections and muscle relaxants for the treatment of wrinkles. The difference lies in the manufacturing process. Dysport is slightly more diluted than Botox, which allows for a wider spread of toxin effect. This makes Dysport perfect for large areas, while Botox works best for smaller “touch-ups”.

Dysport and Botox are versions of botulinum toxin. As far as cosmetic purposes,  they both could be used to treat glabellar lines the lines that appear in between the eyebrows, forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet.

What to expect during the procedure?

The procedure is identical for both Botox and Dysport.  The healthcare professional who administers the cosmetic injections uses micro-needles to inject the botulinum toxin into the targeted area. The neurotoxin temporarily weakens the muscles, and the wrinkles are smoothed.

The procedure is approved by the Food and Drug Administration and is painless. Any discomfort caused by the injection should be minimal. The treatment lasts for up to 30 minutes and requires very little to no downtime. The injection sites may present some temporary bumps but these will disappear on their own in 10 to 15 minutes after the injections.

What to expect after the procedure?

The treatment is minimally invasive and requires minimal recovery time. However, it is recommended to refrain from exercise or massage for the next 24 hours. The first results show quickly, but you will notice a remarkable improvement within seven to 14 days after treatment. The effects may last up to three or four months. Most patients schedule their future treatments 3 or 4 times per year.

Dysport may work a little faster than Botox, with the first results showing in the first 24 hours. Patients who undergo Botox treatments notice the first results after 72 hours. As with any other cosmetic procedure, minimal side effects may occur after both treatments. The most common side effects of Dysport and Botox injections are minor pain at the injection site, swelling around eyelids, and headaches.
