Dermal fillers are  made from a natural component of our skin which acts to hydrate and maintain skin volume, elasticity and tone. They are injected just below the surface of the skin to  'plump' out deeper lines and restore a smoother appearance to the face.

Dermal Fillers: Juvederm,  Restylane, Radiesse and Sculptra

Aging is no longer a sentence to wrinkles, facial lines, and skin laxity. Since scientists have traced the loss of our youthful appearance to volume loss and the breakdown of natural collagen, state-of-the-art technology has found multiple ways to combat the merciless passing of the years. Dermal filler injections come to the rescue of people looking to combat wrinkles and restore their youthful facial volume. Furthermore, the treatment has been proven to also plump the lips and smooth acne scars for healthier, brighter, and more rejuvenated skin.

Dermal fillers are natural gel-like substances used to promote natural collagen production, restore lost volume and add fullness to the face and lips. They are non-surgical treatments injected beneath the skin. A popular facial rejuvenation procedure, soft tissue fillers may be:

  • Semi-permanent (e.g., Radiesse) – effects last up to 18 months
  • Non-permanent (e.g., Restylane) – effects last up to 6-12 months

Dermal fillers are created using different substances, but each of them has only one goal: smoothing the facial wrinkles. Patients can choose from fillers that contain:

  • Hyaluronic acid (HA) (e.g., Juvéderm, Restylane) – effects last up to 6-12 months
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) (e.g., Radiesse) – effects last up to 12 months
  • Poly-L-lactic Acid (e.g., Sculptra) – effects last up to more than 2 years

The benefits of dermal fillers

Dermal filler products come with a multitude of benefits for both women and men:

  • Smooth out perioral lines, smile lines, marionette lines
  • Restore volume to cheeks and temples
  • Improve the appearance of scars
  • Combat deeper wrinkles
  • Add fullness and plump thin lips
  • Improve the symmetry of facial anatomy

Since there are many types of dermal fillers available on the market, it is best to discuss the filler you need with your cosmetic Doctor or medical provider. Hyaluronic acid filler or CaHA filler are mostly recommended for adding subtle volume, reducing vertical lip lines, lip augmentation, and smoothing the area under the eyes while Poly-L-lactic acid filler and other semi-permanent fillers combat deep folds and deep wrinkles, lift and contour cheeks, and soften the nasolabial fold.

What to expect during the procedure?

Dermal filler procedures are non-invasive cosmetic procedures. Even though a dermal filler treatment doesn’t involve surgery, the procedure should be performed only by Cosmetic Doctor or qualified medical personnel with a background in cosmetic medicine and experience in administering injectable fillers.

Before the procedure, the healthcare professional will evaluate your facial anatomy and medical history. The procedure itself lasts 15 to 45 minutes per session, depending on the patient’s needs and treatment area. The patient will receive a mild anesthetic, although many fillers already contain lidocaine to reduce discomfort. Afterward, your medical provider will inject a precise amount of filler beneath the skin.

What to expect after the procedure?

The procedure is safe and comes with minimum potential complications. Some patients may experience mild bruising and swelling expected to pass in the following three days. If you had lip treatment, the swelling may last longer. Allergic Skin Reactions are very rare.

The patient can go about their day as soon as the medical provider has finished administering the injectable treatment. However, do follow the cosmetic surgeon’s recommendation regarding aftercare: no exercising or strenuous activities during the day of the procedure.

The first results can be noticed immediately after the procedure. The effects are not permanent and, depending on the type of filler used, they may last between 6 and 24 months. The thicker the dermal filler used, the longer-lasting the results, but to continue to enjoy the benefits additional dermal filler treatment is necessary.

Who will Dermal Fillers benefit?

Dermal Fillers are ideal for treating the following areas:

  • Nasolabial lines (between the nose and mouth)
  • Marionette lines (‘smile lines’ in the corners of the mouth)
  • Glabellar lines ( between the eyebrows)
  • Depressions and blemishes (such as acne scars)
  • Dermal Fillers can also be used to enhance your lips
